Replying to a New Winlink Message
New unread messages in your Winlink Inbox will appear in a bold type. You can reply to any message.
Checking into a Winlink net is identical to replying to a Winlink message. Just make sure you read the net preamble (the Winlink message you receive opening the net) very carefully and follow the directions of the net control station with exactness.
- Click on the message you want to reply to.
- Click Message in the menu bar at the top of the screen and select Reply….
- If you want to reply to all of the recipients of the message, select Reply to All.
Use the Reply to All feature very sparingly. Make sure your reply is truly relevant and meaningful to all of the recipients. In general, you should not use the Reply to All unless directed to do so.
A message window will open with all the fields populated with the relevant information. The To and Subject lines should be filled in and the original message is in the body below.
- Type your reply message at the top of the message body, above the line that starts “—– Message from ….. —–”.
Before you post your message to the Outbox, re-read your message and make sure the grammar and spelling are good.
Also, be aware that all of the text is going to be sent across the air. The longer the message, the longer it will take to send. Consider deleting some or even all of the original message to minimize the transmit time.
- Click Post to Outbox.
- Using the drop down box at the top of the Winlink window, select the desired transmit mode. If your Winlink is not connected to a radio, select Telnet Winlink.
- Click Open Session.
A new Telnet Winlink Session window will open.
- Click Start.
Any messages in your Outbox will be sent. Then any messages waiting for you on the Winlink Central Message Servers will be downloaded to your Inbox.
After the send and receive operations is complete, you will see “*** Disconnected at xxxxxxxxx (current date and time).
- When you see the disconnected message at the end of the session log, you can close the session window by clicking Exit in the upper left corner.
